God is both perfectly loving and perfectly holy.
To understand where you belong, you need to understand who God is. He is both perfectly loving and perfectly holy. His love draws us to Him. His holiness explains why we can't simply come home on our own.
“God is love.”
“Be holy, because I am holy.”
When you picture God, do you emphasize His love, His holiness—or both together?
We often think love and justice are opposites. But in God, they are one. Holiness means God is the standard of good. He is light with no darkness. Love means He wants the true good of His creation. If God ignored evil, victims would be forgotten and the world would stay broken. If He only punished evil, none of us would pass the test. The Bible says God is holy love—love too true to be soft, and holiness too good to be cruel.
We feel this tension: our conscience says justice matters, but our heart aches for mercy. Only in God do those needs meet. The cross is where God's justice and God's love meet.
The God whose holiness won't ignore evil is the God whose love won't abandon us. Step by step, The Bible shows how holy love sets the world right.
This matters. It is the truth about why we need a rescue, not just a roadmap. This truth explains why we have hope.

“Be holy, because I am holy.”
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.”
Reflect on this
- Why is it good news that God's love is also holy—and His holiness is loving?
- Does your view of love or justice align with God's definition?
If God is love, why won't He simply forgive?
Because real love tells the truth about evil and the cost of sin. Just 'letting it go' would be unloving to victims. It would be dishonest about the wound sin causes. In the Bible, love and justice are friends. Forgiveness is costly mercy. The Christian claim is that God Himself pays that cost. Evil is judged, and therefore sinners are welcomed.
Is holiness strict or restrictive?
Holiness is God’s moral beauty. Think less of a rulebook and more of sunlight for the soul. We thrive when we live the way He designed us, like fish thrive in water. Holiness is the atmosphere of life with God. It is the goodness where love grows.
Is judgment unloving?
Judgment is love’s decision to protect what it loves. Not caring about evil would be unloving. The wonder of Christianity is that God’s judgment and mercy meet. He upholds justice, but at His own cost, He makes a way for mercy. That is what holy love looks like in action.
Why does it seem like the 'Old Testament God' is angry and the 'New Testament God' is loving?
That split doesn't work. The Old Testament is full of God's patience and love. The New Testament speaks plainly about judgment. It is one story about one God. He consistently brings justice and mercy together. The cross doesn't change God's character. It displays it—holy love in public.
